RED STAR CD ALBUM COVER

BRIEF:  RED STAR ‘THE VAULTS’ CD SLEEVE & BAND PHOTOGRAPHY

Red Star performs a high-energy mix of original material of Indie, classic and hard rock. This 5 piece Yorkshire band formed in and around Huddersfield, early 2004. They are continuously developing a strong following of all ages. They are arguably the most dynamic and energetic live act coming out of the North of England today, switching easily between driving rock and more chilled numbers.

Thunderous drums, Funked up Synth sounds, genius “Lead” Bass and razor sharp, screaming guitars all lay the foundations for Bloy’s dark, suggestive and controversial lyrics, with his vocal delivery and antics on stage that are becoming legendary. RED STAR is the band that will define a generation!

(Sheffield Student magazine, jan 2008)

“The lads from ‘RED STAR’ definitely have a big future with influences ranging from Oasis, The Stones Roses and a twist of Kasabian, they ARE the band to rejuvenate indie rock. In ‘Northerners In London Town’, they may well have a modern classic”.

(BBC Radio Manchester oct 2007)
“Redstar sent shivers down the spines of the scene kids, then made them re-assess there attire”.

Orthopaedic& Trauma Times Journal ISSUE 7

The last four months have seen some serious changes and the future definitely looks brighter for the new look Orthopaedic and Trauma Times (OTT), The Official Castaways UK Journal.

An ever increasing readership and the demand for a relevant medical journal for all the multidisciplinary staff involved in the provision of care in Orthopaedics, Trauma and Casting has meant OTT was ready for a top to toe makeover.

When the invitation came to Ten Men Design to help, the quarterly 40 page Journal had been running for 12 months, slowly building a loyal base of readers, so the transition to the new style and branding needed to be instant, professional and dove tail nicely with no disruption to the regular circulation.

Upon examination, it became apparent that the publication had it’s priorities all wrong with advertising taking the lead and articles slotted in where ever possible. As with any document of learning, it was obvious from the start the focus had to be on the written word – easy to follow, informative and yet aesthetic. A clear, concise layout was needed with classic font use working effortlessly with vibrant colours and illustrated medical imagery.

Now the readership, subscriptions and advertising revenue have all increased due to the new strong objectives for the content, specific targeted advert placing – mutually successful for all parties. This new structure has meant OTT and Ten Men Design have a firm foundation to build on quarterly and can fine tune the style in future publications.

Anne Petty MBE, Chair for Castaways UK Steering Group said: “Everyone at Castaways UK are delighted with our makeover. Our new layout means clearer Articles and Guidelines to help the reader keep up-to-date. We are especially excited about the Step-By-Step Casting Pullout Section; each issue focussing a different part of the body.

With the Journal we needed it to reflect the interests of all the members of Castaways UK as they are from all disciplines and we are really pleased that this issue, once again, it covers a wide spectrum of issues all pertinent to our Readers and it looks really great too! We have been overwhelmed by the feedback and support we have received.  It seems a Journal like OTT has been well overdue!”

The first in the new series, Issue Five landed on doorsteps during April 2009 and it’s reception stimulated an excellent reception with a surge in new & renewal subscriptions. At the time of writing this, Issue Six is currently on press and scheduled for early July 09 distribution with plans for Issue Seven to appear in the Autumn 09.

HERITAGE PANELIn September, Blackley Baptist Church, near Elland threw open the doors to share her wealth of architectural and cultural history dating back over 219 years as part of the national Heritage Open Days Scheme.

As a local lad, the building on the hill top and the congregation have been connected to my family since 1950 when my mum and grandma started to attend services. When I first heard about this project I instantly decided I had to be involved and help in anyway possible with the graphics. I felt it was important to try and show Blackley through the ages in the rich informative manner, sympathetic to their location, based on old photos, memorabilia and memories of the congregation.  I created three history panels in banner form for ease of storage (1842-1926 pictured), one Baptists Today panel and an illustrated Church guide to compliment the graphic backdrops.

The whole open days experience incorporated a weekend full of activities, guided tours around the historic building, Church records and memorabilia on display, a celebration Church Service including a short play about the history of the church and a evening of popular song from the local Marsh Ladies Choir, attended by the Mayor & Mayoress of Calderdale.

Mr Steve Harvie, Minister of Blackley Baptist Church, said: “ The panels Tim designed were central to telling the story of our Church and worked extremely well with the co-ordinated guide book.  The panels were an excellent solution to creating something that would give visitors the information they needed for the Heritage Open Days event without the need to erect heavy display boards.  Tim did a brilliant job in putting together the right amount of text and illustration.  We can store the banners away and put them up wherever and whenever we want to.  When we had the concert in the main church, for example, we moved the panels to the downstairs hall where people read them during the interval.  It was a very successful weekend with so many visitors saying how much they had enjoyed coming to see us”

Heritage Open Days were established in 1994 as England’s contribution to European Heritage Days, in which 49 countries now participate. Organized by volunteers, Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee. Heritage Open Days also includes tours, events and activities that focus on local architecture and culture. The Open Days are England’s biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event. Last year the event attracted around 1 million visitors. English Heritage gives central co-ordination and a national voice to the event. People from all walks of life who care about and take pride in the environment they live in make Heritage Open Days happen.

Simon Jones on Kilimanjaro summit

Massive congratulations goes to Mr Simon Jones of Brighouse, West Yorkshire for pushing himself to the limits on his toughest trek yet – conquering the greatest mountain in Africa, the sky-high Mount Kilimanjaro.

Standing at 5,896m, Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world and Simon joined forces with a team of intrepid fundraising explorers to attempt the Macmillan Cancer Support Kilimanjaro Hiking Challenge in February 2009.

The experience offered them the chance to reach new heights whilst raising money to help people living with cancer. Their path, followed the Machame Route, taking them from the base of this huge dormant volcano, over moorland, rocky trails and scree to the glaciers at the summit.

Long days of trekking, tough terrain and the ever increasing altitude combined to make this the ultimate physical and mental challenge, but the spectacular ice cliffs and breathtaking views across the Maasai plains, together with the knowledge that they were supporting people with cancer with their every step, would be their reward.

With an outstanding individual effort by Simon of raising £4700, it was with great pleasure that Ten Men Design and all the supporters were able to offer fundraising support on his worthy journey.  The grand total raised for their particular Challenge 2009 Team was an unbelievable £175, 000.

By raising this money, they have helped to change the lives of people affected by cancer throughout the UK.
